Welcoming Families From Around the World

I am working in childcare center and the family would come from China. The way in which I will prepare to be culturally responsive I will learn the language, what part of the country they are from, what are their traditions, customs, and the holidays they celebrate and I would prepare the student in the class so that they can also become familiar with the new families differences. Frist I would learn some words in Chinese so that I can teach the children how to greet them and introduce myself. By learning what part of China they are from will increase my knowledge as to who the family is and show them respect. Knowing their traditions, customs, and holidays will help me to plan a curriculum that will be free from bias and will make a warm and loving environment in order to make the family feel welcomed, safe and secure.

  1. Hi Sandra
I am sure the child and his family would feel very welcome being greeted in Chinese. It is a great idea to learn some words in the child language. Being able to communication is important when starting a new relationship.

  2. Sandra,
I think it would be very welcoming to the child and family if you knew some phrases in their home language. It would especially help the child transition if the other children also tried communicating with the child in her home language. I also think it is important to prepare the rest of the class for the child's arrival. This way they can all know what to expect and how to act. It may also bring up issues of prejudice and biases that can be addressed with the class before the child arrives. For example if a little boy exclaimed that all Asians look alike, you could discuss differences and similarities among people. I enjoyed reading your thoughts and you had great ways of being cultural responsive to the child and her family.
