Communication and Culture

Diversity is an issue we cannot escape. In every aspect of life we see diversity. In my studies I have learned that diversity is not just race but it is language, traditions, norms, foods and customs. Yes I defiantly communicate differently with different groups and cultures. My line of work I help children with developmental delays and I conduct house visits. My children are not older than 3. I speak to them on their level and use sign language. I teach them how to sign so that they can meet their needs. However, I do not sign to the parents I speak normal adult language. When I speak to my colleagues we speak in more medical and therapeutic terms. I am sure that in every day situation our manner in speaking to others changes so the lines of communication will stay open and become strong. Three strategies that I can us to help communicate more effectively with other one is to speak in a respectful manner. Know the audience you are speaking too and speak clear and honest.

  1. Hi Sandra,

You listed three good strategies that anyone could use to be more effective in communicating with others of any culture. One specific strategy you gave I liked was, “knowing your audience” when communicating. I believe when you know who you are going to be communicating to you give more thought to what you will be communicating, and in what style or form you will deliver your information. For instance, when talking with children, and their families you would be communicating on a professional level, but also with a respectful tone to help them feel welcome.

  2. Sandra this is a perfect example of how we can change our language according to the different audiences in which we encounter. The thing I enjoy most about these blog posts is that we can see different perspectives on our topics.

In order to adapt our conversation we have to acknowledge the cultural values of the children and families we are in contact with. This assist with removing barriers and negative judgments that hinders effective communication.

  4. Sandra,
I enjoyed your post. I like the fact you stated know your audience when communicating because if you are not familiar with your audience they can lose focus of what you are communicating. Yes, people in the medical field do often speak the medical terminology just like professions in ECE will use more child care terms when speaking to other ECE professions.
    Thank,
